Through the Radar Looking Glass: Revealing Earth Processes with SAR
The Shannon Pulse reveals the hidden rhythm of Ireland’s River Shannon using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data to understand, forecast, and mitigate flood risk across the basin. By harnessing Sentinel-1 imagery, which penetrates clouds and darkness, we can continuously monitor changes in water extent, soil moisture, and land surface conditions throughout the year, even during Ireland’s stormy winters. Our automated workflow, built in Google Earth Engine and refined in QGIS, analyses backscatter patterns from 2015–2024 to map flood extents, detect persistent inundation, and trace long-term floodplain dynamics. Coupled with real-time data from ground-truth sensors, these insights will train an AI model capable of forecasting high-risk flood zones before they occur. This project directly addresses NASA’s “Through the Radar Looking Glass” challenge by using SAR to expose processes invisible to optical sensors. The Shannon Pulse transforms radar reflections into actionable intelligence for disaster management, real estate planning, insurance valuation, and climate resilience, offering a clear, year-round view of how Ireland’s greatest river breathes with the seasons.

Debugonauts
Our team, Debugonauts, built a lightweight image exploration platform that makes NASA’s gigapixel and terapixel imagery fast and accessible. Using Flask (Python) for the backend and React (TypeScript + Tailwind) for the frontend, our system downloads and stitches NASA WMTS tiles, then re-tiles them into 128×128 pixel segments. We developed a technique we call semi-lazy rendering, which fully renders only what’s visible on screen and partially renders surrounding areas in lower resolution to create smoother scrolling and navigation. The “Embiggen Your Eyes” challenge calls for a scalable and interactive way to explore massive NASA image datasets. Our approach directly solves the problem of slow and fragmented loading by combining tile-based rendering with semi-lazy loading, reducing bandwidth and computation demands. This design enables responsive, near-real-time interaction even on standard devices. NASA’s ultra-high-resolution imagery contains immense scientific and educational value, but its size has made exploration difficult. Our solution bridges that gap—turning overwhelming data into a fluid, accessible experience that invites discovery for scientists, students, and the public alike.

Project Helios
by Boundless
Commercializing Low Earth Orbit (LEO)
The Boundless proposal outlines the industrialization of low-Earth orbit (LEO) infrastructure through its scalable space station, HELIOS with a long-term vision to enable expanded human activity across the solar system. HELIOS’s phased business model begins with Phase 1, focusing on premium-niche microgravity manufacturing and Microgravity-as-a-Service (MaaS), targeting a revenue potential of $90-$400 million annually by Year 5. This transitions to Phase 2, which emphasizes high-volume B2B sales of advanced materials and culminates in Phase 3, where the core business shifts to Logistics-as-a-Service (LaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), positioning the station as a Lunar Gateway utility and targeting up to $3 billion annually by Year 15. The project's central value proposition is the creation of a circular economy by harvesting and recycling space debris, which can be valued in the billions or trillions of dollars into raw materials, thereby reducing the risk of catastrophic collisions and cutting costs associated with launching materials from Earth. Boundless acknowledges the intense competition from existing commercial station developers like Axiom Space and Blue Origin, as well as specialized manufacturers, stressing the necessity of collaboration over seeking a monopoly in LEO. The proposal also highlights the technical development of KAWAN-67 Drones for space debris detection using a YOLO V8 MobileNet machine learning model.

CodeOrbiters
Our project for the NASA Space Apps 2025 Hackathon focused on building an AI-driven air quality prediction system using open Earth observation data. We used multiple atmospheric datasets from NASA’s TEMPO and MERRA-2 satellites — including HCHO, NO₂, SO₂, CO, O₃, aerosol, temperature, wind speed, and precipitation — to analyze and forecast air pollution trends. Since the data was provided in .nc4 (NetCDF) format, we created a fully automated preprocessing pipeline in Google Colab that converted each folder of satellite data into unified CSV files using xarray and pandas. After cleaning, merging, and aligning the datasets by time and location, we engineered features like combined pollutant indices and wind-adjusted pollutant spread. We then trained an XGBoost regression model to predict future pollutant concentrations such as NO₂ and HCHO, achieving strong accuracy with an R² score of around 0.89 and RMSE below 0.12. The pipeline successfully processed over 10,000 records with 35 features and produced interpretable predictions and trend visualizations. The project demonstrates how open NASA data can be transformed into actionable insights for cleaner skies, offering potential for real-time air quality alerts, policy planning, and public dashboards. Future work includes integrating LSTM models for time-series forecasting and building an interactive web interface using Streamlit and Folium for geospatial visualization.

A World Away: Hunting for Exoplanets with AI
This project develops a robust classification system for identifying Earth-like exoplanets by leveraging data from NASA's Kepler, K2, and TESS missions. The initial phase involves a rigorous data curation process, where critical features are extracted from the three separate datasets and consolidated into a single, unified, and structured CSV file. This refined dataset is then used to train and compare two powerful machine learning models: Random Forest and the state-of-the-art XGBoost algorithm. A key innovation of this solution is the creation and integration of a proprietary data profile for Earth, formatted to align with the feature set of the exoplanet data. This establishes our planet as the fundamental reference point (0,0) within the model's feature space. In the operational phase, newly observed exoplanet data is processed by the trained model and projected onto this feature space. The system then calculates the Euclidean distance between each exoplanet's position and the Earth's reference point. The final output ranks candidate exoplanets based on this distance metric, where those closest to (0,0) are identified as the most Earth-like and thus the most promising candidates for potential habitability.

SharksFromSpace
by Zelebobiki
We built an open, end‑to‑end pipeline for NASA Space Apps 2025 “Sharks from Space” that turns satellite signals into practical shark‑risk insights. Our compact multi‑task AI model takes only coordinates (lat, lon), reconstructs key ocean indicators (chlorophyll‑a, sea‑surface temperature, seasonal harmonics), and predicts shark presence as a probability. This design is robust where some layers are missing and runs efficiently on CPU, enabling near‑real‑time updates. The system outputs explainable risk maps, reconstructed features for QA, and a lightweight API for alerts and integrations. A simple web dashboard lets lifeguards plan coverage, researchers track migrations, and local authorities act proportionately—supporting public safety without harming sharks. Because sharks are keystone predators, keeping them in the water sustains reefs, fisheries, and coastal economies. Our reproducible code and clear metrics make the solution ready for pilots and growth beyond the hackathon.

Seismic Detection Across the Solar System
We aimed to develop an improved pipeline for the transmission and distribution of seismic data. We noticed the similarities between edge computing high accuracy, low power usage models, and implemented a similar system in our project, using quake heuristics and filters. This is intended to be placed on the lander, to ensure it only transmits relevant seismic data. We then created a pipeline to email interested researchers with a link to the data once it is received. This will increase the availability and ease of access of the data. Combined, this addresses the challenge of high power draw and low quality data, uncategorised and miscategorised data, and researchers not receiving data in a timely and useful manner.

Global Climate Dashboard
by Green Guardians 🌍
In our project, we developed an interactive climate dashboard focused on tracking and visualizing global methane emissions. Utilizing NASA's CMS-Flux system and satellite data, the dashboard allows users to explore methane emissions from various sources, including both natural areas like wetlands and anthropogenic activities such as agriculture, fossil fuel extraction, waste management, and fires. By providing a spatial resolution of emissions, our dashboard offers valuable insights into where methane is being emitted and in what quantities. The dashboard addresses the challenge of understanding and managing greenhouse gas emissions by presenting complex data in an accessible and user-friendly format. With recent research indicating that methane emissions from aquatic environments and fossil fuel sources may be underestimated, our tool allows scientists, policymakers, and the public to track these emissions more effectively. The integration of statistical methods to assess uncertainties enhances the reliability of the data presented. This project is crucial in the broader context of climate change because methane is significantly more potent than carbon dioxide in trapping heat in the atmosphere over a shorter time frame. Reducing methane emissions is essential for mitigating global warming and its impacts. Our climate dashboard not only aids in monitoring and analyzing methane emissions but also supports countries and organizations in developing strategies to reduce these emissions. By providing clear visualizations and accessible data, we hope to foster informed decision-making and encourage proactive measures to combat climate change.

Beyond Sunlight: An Aquatic Chemosynthetic World
Our project focuses on exploring the possibility of sustaining life on Europa, one of Jupiter's moons, by leveraging cutting-edge concepts from quantum physics and biochemistry. We have developed a system that utilizes chemosynthesis, a process used by organisms on Earth to convert chemical energy from inorganic compounds into food, as a primary source of energy. Since Europa’s surface is ice-covered, sunlight is scarce, and photosynthesis is impractical, chemosynthesis offers a viable alternative for energy generation in this environment. To further optimize resource use, we integrated a quantum replicator into our system. This device harnesses the principles of quantum mechanics to manipulate energy at a molecular level, enabling efficient food production and other essential materials. The quantum replicator taps into the energy generated through chemosynthesis and uses it to replicate organic molecules necessary for life support systems. Our solution addresses the NASA challenge of sustaining life in environments deprived of sunlight, like the aquatic environments hypothesized to exist beneath Europa’s ice layer. By combining chemosynthesis and quantum replicators, we create a self-sustaining ecosystem capable of supporting life in the harsh, sunlight-deprived environment of Europa. This project is important as it pushes the boundaries of space exploration, offering innovative ways to enable human survival on other celestial bodies. It expands our understanding of life’s potential beyond Earth, contributing to the long-term goals of space colonization and deep-space exploration.

Fighting Fire with Fire
Managing Fire: Increasing Community-based Fire Management Opportunities
Though satellites are an important and amazing tool in our arsenal in the 21st century, having sensors on the ground is an key factor in ensuring speedy detection and addressal by emergency services. Our project intends to take on the challenge of “Managing Fire” by installing an array of sensors located through wild-fire prone areas. Each individual unit contains heat, humidity and smoke detectors that is the relayed back to a central station to be processed and displayed on a suitable graph. This real-time data can help emergency services quickly locate and stop the flames whilst it is still in its early phase. This is important in working quicker to minimise the damage to the environment and local communities. Combined with the data from satellites on terrain, weather, etc. this can be fed into a prediction algorithm which can track and forecast the spread of the fire.

Ocean gardening is a concept where we plant marine plants in the ocean to increase CO2 absorption in the ocean and food production. Ocean can be viewed as a garden that provides beauty, resources, and CO2 drawdown for society. The challenge is to create an accessible platform that visually, sonically, and interactively educates users about important ocean-provided services in a way they can easily understand. We developed a website called "Ocean Green" to show the career opportunities, awareness programs, volunteering initiatives to up-bring the idea of gardens in ocean. This is to reduce CO2 levels in the atmosphere as in earth oceans covers the most proportion. However ocean gardening concept is less popular among people around for the following reasons. Lack of public awareness and support for ocean gardens Unavailability of community on ocean garden Lack of skilled labours The website contains information about various sea pants available in oceans around the world. The website also has a community option for users who wants to be part of ocean green .They can get trainings for scuba diving, ocean gardening, seminars about sea plants, recipes using them. Those who are trained in scuba diving can become gardener and share their progress in the website. We also use social media to promote our website to different investors like government, food industries , other food import/export companies. Hence the ocean gardening gets promoted all over the world.

Ghosts
Our challenge that we picked was Titan City, 3023. The main priority of this challenge was to explore the challenges of remote planet habitation and the challenges and solutions to those issues. Our team believes that for this to happen, we need to inspire a generation to research these issues and that begins with engaging kids and showing children this is a possibility. We created a game using NASA's data for kids to learn about different planets and moons. We researched the moon, Saturn's Titan, Mars and 55 Cancri e as examples. The game is aged for kids 9+. The objective of the game is to travel to these planets and moons and report back conditions and information gathered from the planet or the moon. At the end of each level there is a quiz which is the player reporting back to mission control. This mechanic also helps to move onto the next 'planet'. All our information was gathered from NASA's open source data. The challenges are genuine challenges you would face on the planets like extremely low temperatures, rough terrain and different levels of gravity to include a few we have implemented. The solutions are very simplified and made into fun games as to include the kids but they also contain accurate information and tests the kids at the end.
